NATIONAL GRIME STATISTICS
Thursday, 21.
Whirlpool (UK) Ltd, subsidiary of the Whirlpool Corporation, the
world’s leading manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances
today unveiled a national survey to highlight the time constraints
put upon home-owners from domestic chores in the home. Whirlpool has
signalled its commitment to creating time-saving appliances by the
development of its 6th Sense technology across its cooking, cooling,
dishwashing and washing home appliances. The survey of men and women
looks at the nation’s attitudes to housework tasks from cooking and
cleaning to laundry. It considers which tasks we love and hate and
what we would rather do with our time than housework.
North/South Divide
The survey identifies that Northerners feel they ought to spend
more time cleaning, testimony to northern pride in their homes. The
figures show that 32% of Northerners felt this way whilst only 14% of
Southerners do. In contrast 40% of Southerners would be willing to
spend less time on household chores versus only 15% of people in the
Midlands and 14% from the North. But it is home owners in the
Midlands who seem to have the balance right, with 47% believing they
spend the right amount of time on housework. In the south less than
half at 23% and only 35% in the north can boast the same
house’work/life’balance.
Who is top of the Mops?
When asked which celebs we would have do our housework for a day
pop music’s King and Queen, Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue, have
been voted top of the mops. There are considerable regional
differences in the responses. In London, for example, Jennifer Lopez
and Pierce Brosnan were the top choice, but Yorkshire women prefer
Sean Connery, and Welsh men opt for Sharon Stone. Tommy from
Groundforce was particularly popular amongst Scottish women, who put
him in second place after Russell Crowe.
Male Brooming
The battle of the sexes is alive and well when it comes to who
works the hardest and who actually wields the broom in the home.
Almost 40% of men feel they do the right level of housework compared
to just 28% of women. A further 30% of men actually believe they
should be spending even less time on cleaning the house. Closer
analysis of these responses shows the emergence of the “new man”.
Younger men feel that they should spend more time on housework. Some
44% of young men aged 18-24 say they should spend more time on
household tasks, and only 23% think they do the right amount of
housework. However older men are satisfied, with half of those aged
over 65 saying they do the right amount of housework and only 1 in 5
thinking they should do more.
What turns us on (to appliances)
When it comes to choosing domestic appliances; the genders clash
again. Quality and reliability is rather more important to women
whilst ease of use is relatively more important for to men, as is
time saving. For the young, energy efficiency is rather more
important than it is for the young at heart (over 55s) who are more
likely to want ease of use and value for money.
