New Rosetta City: New coastal city for 250,000 people
New Rosetta City (NRC) is intended to provide housing and infrastructure for more than 250,000 people on Egypt's Mediterranean coast. The mixed-use coastal city links housing, tourism, commerce and public waterfront areas with the regional economy.
At the Nile estuary near Rosetta (Rasheed), where the Rosetta Stone was found, the site combines 13 kilometres of coastline with regional industries such as shipbuilding and agriculture. The requirement was for a plan that brings together affordable housing, economic diversification and environmentally responsible development.
Dorsch was commissioned by the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) to design the 1,302-hectare city. The strategic masterplan and infrastructure masterplan integrate housing types, tourism and commercial uses, an international port, sensor-based smart-city technologies for water and energy, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for connectivity and public transport.
